The Kvichak River is a large river near Bristol Bay. One of the most popular stretches to fly fish is the section called the Braids. The Braids are made up of hundreds of different channels separated from the main flow of the river. This Braids section begins about 5 miles from the outlet of Lake Lliamna. This river has one of the largest Sockeye Salmon runs in the world, and when you combine that with the low pressure levels and massive Rainbow Trout it is obvious why this is one of the most sought after fishing destinations in Alaska.
This is a snow fed river making it crystal clear and it provides the nutrients to turn these native Rainbow’s into massive trout. And since it is the only water to get from Bristol Bay to Lake Lliamna, the salmon have no other way to return to their spawning grounds. These two factors make the fly fishing on this great river outstanding.
Rainbow Trout fishing is good from June through October but the best time to fly fish for Rainbow’s is June and September. King Salmon fishing starts off the Salmon runs in June and July. These salmon are followed by the Sockeye runs in July, and the Chum Salmon in July and August. Last but not least you will find the Silver Salmon in August and September.
Remember that the local bear also like the taste of salmon so don’t be surprised to see them fishing the river also. There are many experienced fly fishing guides, along with fly fishing travel packages available to choose from just be sure to book your reservations early while they are still available.
There are many guides available throughout the state, and they are familiar with many of the rivers. This is what they do for a living and most of them are quite good at their job. They will get you to where the fish are, provide equipment and teach you how to fish form these massive Salmon.
